Is it possible to create Asset Group or tag specific assets based on NetBIOS? I would like to use this Asset Group not for scanning but for reporting purposes.
Yes. I would create the TAG by going to Vulnerability Management->Assets->Asset Search.
Build your search and test that it give you what you want then you can just tell it at the bottom to build the TAG based on the Asset Search criteria.
Let me know if you need a walk through or example.
I didn't mention that my list with NetBIOS values is 15.000 hosts long.
ok so your NETBIOS names are they consistent like
Something like that? The tagging via Asset Search will support something like Netbios begins with; end with & contains. Maybe post a sample of what your NETBIOS names look like and I can suggest.
If Asset Search is unable to solve the issue you could write a groovy script but I try to avoid if I have other options.
In that case it's time to learn Groovy. Maybe there will be a way to inject file with 15.000 NetBIOS values.
It is not hard and I think I have an example of groovy matching on a Netbios. But if there is no consistent pattern to use are you just searching for the existence of the netbios value?
Otherwise I can come up with an example in groovy if you want; may take a bit as I will at least try to do a rudimentary testing and your TAM will need to activate groovy for your subscription. I just try to avoid groovy if possible as it seems to be more prone to errors and updates and generally less maintainable in the long run.
One more thing, the Asset Search is an AND operation so if you where to put multiple NETBIOS names they would represent an AND not an OR.
Now if you had several different patterns to your netbios you could create an Asset Search for each unique pattern and then do a report on any asset with any of the tags as well.
