I'm performing a 100gB bandwith using AES128-GCM-SHA256 cipher vs RC4-MD5. Ive noticed the RC4 cipher performing better than the AES.
Should I expect the AES128 cipher would actually outperform the RC4-MD5 cipher?
RC4 is generally faster than anything else at the same encryption strength. MD5 is also faster than SHA1 or SHA2. However, RC4, MD5 and SHA1 shouldn't be used any more if avoidable.
Using GCM for a plaintext greater than 64GB is a bad idea. In this case you would be better of with ChaCha20-Poly1305 or some AES128-CBC-SHA256.
Thank you Rob for responding and sharing the information.
