Mail server security

Hi,

can the server check of SSLLABS be applied to mail servers as well? How much does security depend on the mail client used? I would say the mail client sets the security protocol used (as the browser does).

If the answer is yes, it would be cool to implement a further test called "Mail client check" compared to "Browsers check" to increase the pressure of their developers to provide more secure solutions.

I am looking for a secure as possible solution for communication within a group of mail users inside the same domain. Thus sending and receiving messages/files is secured with SSL/STARTTLS and there is only one server involved.

I am not sure if I need a root server that I can configure on my own with an application (which?) or can go to a qualified hoster and use his standard secure mail service (which SSL/TLS standard is used there? How can I check what is used?)?

Many many questions, I know....a hint would be cool to guide me to the right least complex solution.

Cheers,

Ralph
