On mobile devices - Invalid security certificate - no issuer chain was provided

Question asked by Michael Mueller on Mar 24, 2014

Hello from Germany,

we are a Touroperater for Sardinia and Corsica and just fond out that our catalogue sites https://www.ferien-in-sardinien.com

and https://www.ferien-in-korsika.com  display the following error message on all mobile devices (Android, iPhone) ==>

Site uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided. (Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer).

I tested both of our sites with SSL Server Test from Qualys SSL Labs. In the section "Additional Certificates (if supplied)" I see for sites

==> Certificates provided     1 (1401 bytes)  Chain issues     Incomplete.

On the net I found that SSL installations on Web Servers may work fine on usual PCs / Laptops but not on Android or iPhone / iPad devices because the issuer chani is incomplete or not in a correct sequence.

My question: Where can I find instructions how to complete / re-order the SSl issuer chain on a Microsoft-IIS/6.0 HTTP server ?
